IS 453 Information Books and Resources for Youth

Evaluation, selection and use of information books and other resources for young people (ages 0-18) in public libraries and school media centers; explores standard selection criteria for factual print and nonprint materials in all formats and develops the ability to evaluate and promote nonfiction books and resources according to their various uses (personal and curricular) and according to young people's various needs (intellectual, emotional, social and physical).

Learning objectives

  • Students will become comfortable in evaluating informational materials in various media for the purpose of collection development, programming, and curriculum support.
  • Students will become conversant with important issues in collection development and organization peculiar to information books.
  • Students who "only read fiction" will discover their personal comfort zone among informational materials, and be able to impart their newfound enthusiasm to youth patrons.
