Organization and Personnel Management for Librarians

Intended audience: All librarians and information professionals
interested in learning about library organization and personnel management topics;
CPLA program candidates needing to take a core course.
Purpose of the course: To familiarize the student with the basic principles
of library personnel management and organization, including personnel administration
within the context of the mission and goals of the organization. Topics included
are recruitment of staff, making hiring decisions, supervision of staff, evaluation
of staff's performance, identification of training needs, implementation of
training, firing or terminating staff, evaluating the effectiveness of the organizational
structure with regard to personnel management, evaluating personnel policies,
and identifying and securing resources for staff. Upon completion of the course
the candidate is expected to be able to write effective personnel policies,
list the key legal issues involved in hiring and managing staff, describe the
benefits and steps in conducting a staff study, practice basic conflict resolution
skills, write a staff development and training plan that includes the introduction
of technology.
Delivery format: The course will be conducted via the same technology
used by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science online education
program (LEEP). The course will consist of 6 live synchronous sessions of 2
hours each for a total of 12 direct contact hours. Students will also be expected
to participate asynchronously during the 6 weeks via discussion boards.
Technology Requirements: Participants will need a reliable Internet
connection via modem, ISDN, DSL, cable or other dedicated connectivity. A 28.8
or higher speed modem and SLIP, PPP, or other TCP/IP connectivity is required.
Software requirements include a Java enabled Web Browser, Real Player software,
and Adobe Reader. Hardware requirements are: an IBM compatible Pentium II or
greater (at least 400mhz) with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP - or - Macintosh with OS
8 (or a more recent MacOS); 128MB RAM memory; a sound card with speakers and/or
earphones; and a color monitor with at least 800x600 resolution.
