Getting Started

Background:

LEEP Live Sessions are an essential part of instruction at GSLIS. These live or synchronous classes are the online equivalent of meeting in person with the opportunity for lecture, discussion, sharing visual materials and more! Live session areas are "open" 24 hours a day, seven days a week so you can login and test at any time.  Live audio is only played for classes or special events,  so you will hear a prerecorded message if you log in outside of class time.  LEEP classes are generally scheduled for two hours each week (all times Central) and just like an on campus course, attendance and participation are required. Training is available in workshops before the start of each semester and live tech support is provided during all LEEP live sessions.

LEEP Live Sessions consist of three major components:

  1. Audio: A live audio stream for lectures and presentations
  2. Chat: A chatroom for questions and class discussion
  3. Slides: Web-based resources shared by students or instructors, including websites, lecture notes, images, or application-sharing tools.

Software Requirements:

LEEP Live Sessions are designed to work on just about networked computer with the ability to play sound through speakers or headphones. You will need two pieces of free software:

  1. A web browser* with a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768
  2. Real Player software
Test your Real Player software | Download Real Player

* While the live session environment will work in most browsers, GSLIS recommends the following:

Windows (PC): Internet Explorer | Firefox
Macintosh: Firefox | Camino (Safari does not support certain features)

*Alternate methods of accessing chat are available.  Contact us if you need more information

Entering and Participating

Entering:

  1. Login from the GSLIS Website (http://www.lis.uiuc.edu)
  2. Select your course and enter your course page
  3. Select the link located in the "Resources Block" (top left) or "Summary Block" (top center) shortly before your scheduled class time (~10 minutes)
  4. The LEEP Live Session Interface will appear on your screen:

Participating:

Live Audio:
  • Click on either audio link to launch the live audio stream in Real Player.

Note:

  • Real Player is required for audio although a beta mp3 stream is available (2: play mp3) which can stream with a number of different programs (Windows Media Player, iTunes, etc.)
  • RTSP works better for most users.
  • Music will be played ~10 minutes before class begins so you can test out your audio. When your instructor is ready, their voice will be broadcast in real time.
Changing Your Name:
  • You will be logged in automatically as your NetID. You can change your name by entering a new name in the "Nickname" box and then clicking the "Change" button OR type in the chatroom:
/nick name and hit enter the chat area (insert your name for name e.g. /nick John).
  • A list of participants appears on the right side of the screen so you know who else is logged in.
Text Chat:

  • Main Room: Text chat is the primary way to interact with your instructor and classmates during your live session.  Chat will show up in the large window at the center of the page.  To talk in the chat room, just enter text in the horizontal text bar below the chat window and hit enter.  The system knows who you are so no need to identify yourself.  Don't worry too much about spelling or punctuation as long as people can understand you. This is meant to be an informal place for questions, comments and ideas. Everything typed in the main or side rooms (except whispers) will be archived.

  • Side Rooms: If your instructor assigns you to small group discussion, you may need to join a side or break-out rooms. Each course will have twelve side rooms assigned to it.
  • To join a side room, select it from the "Meeting Room" pulldown

    -OR-
    any user can also type:
/join #rooma (or the room you want) in the chat area and hit enter.
Once you're in a side room, you'll have tabs available to toggle and forth between the main and side rooms:

To close or exit the side room, use the icon in the top right or type /quit in the room you are in.
  • Chat Log: The "Chat Log" link in the tools menu displays an archive in progess of the main and side rooms for your class session.  This is a way to catch up on any chat that you missed, as well as a way to copy and paste text, which is not possible in the live chat room.

  • Whispering: If you would like to send a private (non archived) message to your instructor or classmate, you can "whisper" to them. Whisper messages appear in red as new messages (once in a whisper window it appears as regular text). To whisper, double click on a user's name in the list of users on the right and a separate chat room will appear. Whisper rooms work like Side Rooms and with tabs for toggling or an x to close.
    -OR-
    any user can also type:
/msg Linda message (enter the nickname of the person you are whispering to)
Slides:

Slides can be any web-based material including websites, lecture notes, images, or application-sharing tools.  You will know a slide is sent by the textual cue in the chat room:

Instructors also usually give a verbal prompt when they would like you to view a slide.

  • Opening/Viewing: You have two ways to open as slide when it's been sent:
      1. Click on the URL in the chat room itself (this will always open a new window or tab)
      2. Click the "Latest Slide" link in the "Tools" section of the left navigation bar

Once a slide window or tab is open, you can follow the links, or resize, maximize, minimize or close the windowwhen done.

"Slide History" displays a list of slides that have been sent during your class session.

Note: Pop-up blockers should be set to allow or disabled for both options to work properly.  Pop-up blockers may be set in your browser or in a browser toolbar.  Read more on pop-up blockers here.

  • Sending a Slide: Your instructor will preload and send most of the slides used in class, but if you need to share a web-based resource, you can use the "Send a Slide" link in the tool bar and enter a URL.
  • URLs can also be typed or pasted into the chat room and they will automatically be hyperlinked, but won't be recognized as a slide on the archive  or by the "Latest Slide" tool.

Note:  Slides should be in a format that will load in a web browser - e.g. html, pdf, image, txt etc.  If the content you wish to share is in a special format like Powerpoint or Word, you should convert to another format to share in LEEP.   If you need assistance with this, please contact us.

IRC Tips:

The chat room uses IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and many of the chat functions can be achieved with commands:

  • Change name: /nick newname (e.g. /nick John)
  • Whisper: /msg nickname (e.g. /msg John)
  • Change rooms: /join room (e.g. /join #tech or /join #rooma)
  • Action: /me action (e.g. /me laughs) which will have the action appear in red

Archives

In LEEP live sessions, attendance and participation are generally expected or required. If you have technical problems, join class late, or just want to review what happened, the three main components are automatically archived, and will be available shortly after class. Your Moodle course page's weekly view will include a link to:

  • The archived audio
  • The text chat of the main room and any side or break-out rooms
  • Links to the slides sent by instructors or members of the class (in the chat archive)
If you wish to download the audio archive, you can do so by following these steps:
  1. Right-click (or command-click) on the appropriate audio link
  2. Select "save target as"
  3. open the php file in a text editor where you will find the URL to .ram file
  4. Copy the URL
  5. Paste the URL into your address, changing the end of the URL from .ram to .rm
  6. Hit Enter
  7. Your browser should prompt you to provide a location for the downloaded file
Once you have downloaded the file, you can listen to it in the native Real Audio format, or you can use various tools to convert the file into an mp3 or some other format.  A variety of conversion tools are listed on our Tutorials and Resources page.  The conversion tools are not supported by GSLIS; they are included for your reference only.

Getting Help

Training and support are provided before and during all LEEP Live Sessions.

During LEEP classes, you can get help via the phone or in text chat:

  • Text Chat: Click on the link or type /join #tech in the chat room to join the tech room (the tech room works like the other break out rooms but is shared across classes)
  • 1-800-377-1892
  • (217) 244-9555

Outside of class time, you can also always contact the Office of Instructional Technology and Design or the Help Desk:

8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday (and during LEEP on-campus)
228 GSLIS
help@support.lis.uiuc.edu
1-800-377-1892 | (217) 244-4903

Troubleshooting:

  • A cheat sheet for basic live session troubleshooting is available here: Live Session FAQ
  • Network:  If you experience problems during your live session such as audio rebuffering (sound going in and out), it might be because of network problems.  The following test may help us diagnose your problems:
    Bandwidth Meter
  • Slides: If slides do not open by clicking on "Latest Slide" OR the URL in the chat room, make sure javascript is enabled and pop-up blockers are set to allow or temporarily disabled during class.
  • Ports: If you can't connect to chat or audio, you may need to have specific ports enabled.  The ports used are: 80 (web, audio and chat) with back up audio ports of 554 and 7070.
  • If the chat does not load in your browser, you can get audio slides the above way and get chat through SSH .
