Workshop & Training Opportunities

The Offices of Instructional Technology & Design and User Services offer technology training workshops each semester for students, faculty, and staff.  If you need additional training or would like to suggest a special workshop, please feel free to contact us by emailing help@support.lis.uiuc.edu, by calling 1-800-377-1892 (toll free) or (217) 244-4903, or by visiting room 211 in the GSLIS building.

LEEP Live Session Workshops

The LEEP Live Session Workshops are available both in-person in Room 52 (unless otherwise noted) of the GSLIS building and online in our Moodle workshop space (which we call the Ice Cream class to make it more fun, less intimidating). For information on how to enter and participate in a live session, please review our tutorial and contact the Help Desk with any additional questions. Recommended for students taking their first LEEP class, although anyone in GSLIS is welcome.

Introduction to Moodle Workshops

An introduction to using Moodle, the open-source course management tool that is used by most classes in GSLIS. Recommended for new students, although anyone in GSLIS is welcome.
Note: We will broadcast each workshop and use Webhuddle so you can follow along at-a-distance. The Webhuddle session for each workshop will be sent as a slide at the start of the workshop. You can listen on audio and participate in the chat room.

File Storage in GSLIS

Learn about your options for storing files in GSLIS, including the H Drive, I Drive, and other file storage options at UIUC. Recommended for new students, although anyone in GSLIS is welcome.

Intro to HTML Workshops

Come learn (or brush up on) some HTML basics!
Note: We will broadcast each workshop and use Webhuddle so you can follow along at-a-distance. The Webhuddle session for each workshop will be sent as a slide at the start of the workshop. You can listen on audio and participate in the chat room. If you will be taking this at a distance, please read about and activate your I: Drive and if you wish to follow the online demo, download and install SeaMonkey (a free html editor).

CITES Technology Workshops

In addition to ITD workshops, CITES (the larger UIUC computing wing) offers a number of other workshops and training opportunities that may be useful for GSLIS students, staff and faculty.  Selected workshops are listed below; additional offerings for students, faculty, and staff are listed on the CITES Training website. Most require registration and a small fee.

CITES Laptop Clinics

The CITES Security Group and the CITES Help Desk offer regular laptop clinics open to all members of the University of Illinois community. These laptop clinics not only help improve the security and performance of your laptop, but in turn, help improve the security of the campus network by making more machines secure. The laptop clinics are offered at no cost.

Graduate College Professional Development Workshops

The UIUC Graduate College offers professional development workshops for students at various points in their careers.  Check their Events Calendar for more information, or contact the Career Services office.

Additional Training Opportunities

The UIUC Writers' Workshop is available for all on campus students, faculty, and staff who need help at any stage of the writing process. Writers' Workshop consultants are also familiar with web design and programs like Dreamweaver, and are available to help with these types of projects. Parkland College (the community college for Champaign-Urbana) is a great place to take tech specific classes and learn more about computers.
