PhD student Yuanxi Fu received scholarships for two summer institutes in cybersecurity, network analysis, and computational social science. The summer institutes, which took place in June, were hybrid events hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.

The Center for Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems (CASOS) summer institute covered topics such as dynamic network analysis, network simulation, text-to-networks, and information diffusion.

"The CASOS summer institute had hands-on sessions that allowed me to try out new software packages, such as ORA and NetMapper," said Fu. "I hope to apply the knowledge and skills I learned in my research with Professor Jodi Schneider, which uses network analysis and text mining to assess confidence in research synthesis."

The Center for Informed Democracy and Social-cybersecurity (IDeaS) summer institute focused on disinformation and hate speech detection, topics that are relevant to Fu’s interest in understanding the digital and social infrastructures that support social argumentation.

Fu received her MS in bioinformatics and PhD in chemistry from the University of Illinois and BS in chemistry from Nanjing University in China.  Her primary research interests are argumentation and information management for science.
