File Storage and Sharing

To go through a detailed Tutorial on using the H: and the I: please visit the File Storage Tutorial Page. We recommend going through the tutorial if you are new to file storage and sharing in GSLIS.

For an overview of file storage and sharing, see below:

H: Drive | I: Drive | Instructor Drive | NetFiles | WebFTP | Leaving GSLIS

H: Drive (File Storage)

You have a Home Drive or H: Drive on the GSLIS domain which is available to you when you login to any machine in GSLIS (including those in the LRL, CTL and GSLIS classrooms) as well as remotely.
You have 512 MB of file storage space in your H: drive.

Files on the H: Drive can be accessed using the following methods:

  1. Using  WebDav (recommended) (see instructions).
  2. Through the classroom servers using SFTP (see instructions)
  3. Through the classroom servers using SSH (see instructions)

I: Drive (Web Publishing)

Your I: drive is a web-accessible file storage system that is available both within the GSLIS building and remotely. Before using your I: Drive, you must read the tutorial and enable your I: Drive web space.

You will not have an I: Drive space until you complete these steps !

Once you’ve enabled your I: Drive, you can place content in one of three folders:

  • people_html is publicly available. This space is intended to be a professional space to keep materials such as a CV or résumé. The URL for files in people_html will be
    http://people.lis.uiuc.edu/~NetID/filename
  • courseweb_html is publicly available. This space is intended to house any assignment or web page that you want to share with the world. The URL for files in courseweb_html will be
    http://courseweb.lis.uiuc.edu/~NetID/filename
  • courseweb_htmls is not publicly available. Material housed in this directory is limited to users with GSLIS domain accounts. It is recommended that you store your assignments in this space. The URL for files in courseweb_htmls will be
    https://courseweb.lis.uiuc.edu/~NetID/filename (NOTE the https).

Note:

  • In each of these examples, replace NetID with your UIUC NetID.
  • You have 250 MB of file storage space in your I: drive
  • File storage space will be available for two years after you leave GSLIS
  • the URLs are CaSe sensitive!
  • indexing and scripting (mysql, php, perl, ruby, python) have been turned off by default but are available if you add the below text to a file called .htaccess
    • Indexing:
      Options +Indexes
    • Scripting:
      AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
      Options +ExecCGI

Files on the I: Drive can be accessed using the following methods:

  1. Using WebDav (recommended) (see instructions)
  2. Through the classroom servers using SFTP (see instructions)
  3. Through the classroom servers using SSH (see instructions)
  4. Through Samba (see instructions)

Instructor Drive (Web Publishing)

Instructors also have a course directory which contains two web enabled directories:

  • public_html is publicly available.  The URL for files in public_html will be
    http://courseweb.lis.uiuc.edu/lis/2007fa/lis590xx/filename
  • public_htmls is password protected and restricted to members of the class, admins and others assigned rights.  The URL for files in public_htmls will be
    https://courseweb.lis.uiuc.edu/lis/2007fa/lis590xx/filename (NOTE the https)

Note:

  • You have 500 MB of file storage space in the Instructor Drive per class.
  • substitute semester and course for the correct semester and course number.
  • the URLs are CaSe sensitive!
  • indexing and scripting (mysql, php, perl, ruby, python) have been turned off by default but are available if you add the below text to a file called .htaccess
    • Indexing:
      Options +Indexes
    • Scripting:
      AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
      Options +ExecCGI

Files on the Instructor Drive can be accessed using the following methods:

  1. Using  WebDav (recommended) (see instructions)
  2. Through the classroom servers using SFTP (see instructions)
  3. Through the classroom servers using SSH (see instructions)

NetFiles (File storage and/or Web Publishing)

CITES NetFiles provides file storage space and file sharing for students, staff, and faculty. In addition, options for file sharing using a timed ticketing system allows users to make selected files available to both UIUC and non-UIUC recipients for a set duration.

For more information, see CITES documentation for the NetFiles service.

WebFTP

Effective June 26, 2007, files stored in WebFTP are now read only. Personal content previously stored in WebFTP will be migrated to the I drives, and will be available in your courseweb_html folder upon I drive activation.  Course files have also been migrated to new servers but are still available to the GSLIS community.
If you have questions or concerns regarding the retirement of WebFTP, please contact the GSLIS Help Desk.

Leaving GSLIS

Your file storage access provided through UIUC will expire upon shortly graduation or when you leave the university and file storage with GSLIS will be available for two years after you graduate.  Please consult our Leaving GSLIS guide for more information on account expiration.
