Beta Phi Mu, the library and information studies honor society, was founded at the University of Illinois in August, 1948 by a group of leading librarians and library educators to recognize and encourage scholastic achievement among library and information studies students.

Our motto, Aliis inserviendo consumor, meaning “Consumed in the service of others” was selected by the founders based on the concept of dedication of librarians and other information professionals to the service of others.

Today there are over 47 active chapters of the organization. More than 30,000 individuals have become members.

Beta Phi Mu Diamond Celebration
Friday, October 24-Saturday, October 25, 2008

Beta Phi Mu was founded in 1948 here at the University of Illinois. Join us as Alpha Chapter observes the 60th anniversary of Beta Phi Mu and honors Beta Phi Mu co-founder Kathie Henderson. We're still finalizing the festivities, but please save the date!

The Beta Phi Mu annual initiation and luncheon will be Saturday, October 25, featuring speaker Marion Reid, former national Beta Phi Mu president and GSLIS alumna. Arrangements for exhibits and additional events on Friday, October 24 that spotlight Beta Phi Mu and library history are underway, so plan now to share in our celebratory weekend.

Events will be held at the brand new iHotel in the UIUC Research Park. We've reserved a block of rooms for Beta Phi Mu members. Reserve your room now!
