Sherman Hall is the housing option arranged by GSLIS for the Summer Institute. If this does not suit your needs, you are welcome to arrange your own accommodations (see C-U accommodations below).

Sherman Hall offers 2-person air-conditioned rooms consisting of two private rooms with a connecting shared bathroom. [This is what the Sherman Hall website refers to as a "single" room.] Each private room contains a microwave/refrigerator unit and Internet access. Linens are provided.

Rate: $39.45 per person per night + tax.

Full payment is required at check-in for housing. Participants may pay by cash, check from a US bank, major credit card, or traveler's check. Parking permits can be purchased at the front desk, but at this time, Campus Parking has not confirmed the summer parking rates for 2008. Parking is available in Lot C-16 directly behind Sherman Hall on Daniel Street. There is additional parking in Lot C-6 on the corner of Daniel Street and Fourth Street. The Parking Division has not set the summer rates at this time. Parking passes may be purchased at the front desk when you check in at Sherman Hall.

Champaign-Urbana Area Accommodations

The closest options are the Illini Union Hotel (5 minute walk) and the Hampton Inn (20 minute walk).

Meals/restaurants

The following meals will be provided during the Summer Institute:

Monday, June 2 - Box lunch and buffet dinner
Tuesday, June 3 - Afternoon reception
Wednesday, June 4 - Box lunch

Getting to campus

If you are flying into Willard Airport (http://www.flycmi.com/) and need transportation to campus, the contracted ground transportation service at the airport is Illini Limo. You may make an advance reservation by calling 217.384.5892.

The C-U Mass Transit District also operates an "Air Bus" with direct service from the airport to campus. The Air Bus runs hourly from 5am - 7pm Monday-Saturday and has a reduced schedule on Sundays. Cost is $1 each way. Detailed schedule information is available at http://www.cumtd.com. There is also local taxi service that can be used as an alternative to the bus, since the bus does not run late in the evenings and only departs hourly. If you are flying into Chicago or Indianapolis and need to get to Champaign-Urbana, there are various shuttle options available:

Chicago Shuttles
Lincolnland Express - Shuttles from O'Hare and Midway to Champaign-Urbana depart every 3 hours. Reservations need to be made 2 days in advance. Suburban Express - Weekend shuttle service provided to and from the Chicago suburbs. For more information on schedules and fares visit http://www.suburbanexpress.com or call 217.344.5500.

Amtrak - There are three trains that run daily between Chicago and Champaign-Urbana. Specific information on fares and schedules can be found at http://www.amtrak.com or 1.800.872.7245.

Indianapolis Shuttle
Lincolnland Express - A shuttle from the Indianapolis airport to Champaign-Urbana is available every 3 hours. Reservations need to be made 2 days in advance. On-campus parking & maps

Parking around GSLIS is extremely limited. Plan ahead if you bring a car! If you are staying at Sherman Hall, you can buy a permit for Lot C-16 behind the residence hall and conveniently located across the street from GSLIS. If you are staying at Illini Union Hotel, you will be able to park there and walk to GSLIS

University rental lots are available ONLY after 5:00 p.m. (until 2:00 a.m.) Monday-Friday, and beginning at 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday (note that these lots are CLOSED to parking from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. every day). Some University rental lots have 10 hour meters at $.75 per hour.

Metered parking:

  • City metered street parking: LIMITED city 2-hour parking at $.75 per hour (enforced!!) [bring quarters]. You may be ticketed or towed if your vehicle is located in the same meter space past the 2-hour limit.

  • University metered parking (10-hour/$.75 per hour) in E3 Library lot (corner of Sixth and Armory) and in other University parking lots at metered spots only.

Off-site parking: The University YMCA (2 blocks from GSLIS) also has parking spaces available (1001 S Wright Street in Champaign and across from Lincoln Hall) between June 1 - August 17. For daily rates, contact Johanne at johanne@universityymca.org or 337-1500 for details.
