Combined M.S. in Library and Information Science/K-12 LIS Certification Program Checklist

Please remember that state standards and requirements have a tendency to change frequently. GSLIS will keep this information updated to the best of our ability, but please check websites, program-related e-mail and the Council on Teacher Education (CTE) Student Portal regularly. It is also recommended that students schedule meetings with the Program Coordinator for updates.

Prerequisite:

Date Completed:

Before admission to the Library Information Specialist Certification Program, candidates must successfully complete the Illinois Basic Skills Test. See the Illinois Certification Testing System website for dates, online registration and study guides at http://www.icts.nesinc.com/

Review application procedures for the GSLIS K-12 program here.

Though you can apply to the Master's program and the K-12 Certification program simultaneously, one must be accepted into the Master's program before being considered for the K-12 Program. Current M.S. or C.A.S. students must apply to the certification program by October 15 for spring semester acceptance or by January 15 for summer or fall semester acceptance.

After Admission:

Date Completed:

Enroll in EDPR 203 during your first semester as a K-12 student. EDPR 203 does not carry course credit or appear on transcripts but is a means by which students are assessed the required clinical fee ($650 for 2008-09) for K-12 Certification Program supervision.

Make an appointment with Chet Zych, CTE Certification Officer, by phone (217) 333-7195 for the REQUIRED transcript audit. The audit will state if you have deficiencies in your undergraduate coursework and whether previous coursework you have taken will apply to the LIS, Middle Grades and other content area endorsements.
Attend the K-12 Library Information Specialist Program orientation (fall semester)
Attend Assessment Portfolio workshop (fall semester)
Log in to the CTE Student Portal, which can be found at: http://www.cote.uiuc.edu
The semester before you intend to complete your Practicum (Early Field Experience), clear a fingerprint-based criminal background check through the CTE before enrolling in Practicum. For information on the procedure for fingerprinting, check the CTE website.

CTE Student Portal:

The CTE Student Portal allows students in CTE approved programs to monitor their certification progress. The CTE portal allows students to view their status on requirements such as test scores, Bloodborne Pathogens Training and the Criminal Background Check. The portal also includes information regarding deadlines, announcements, contact information, CTE policies, links to evaluation forms, student teaching time reports and other links of interest.
