Teaching
Developed a new youth services class for the College of DuPage Library Technology Program ( http://www.cod.edu/dept/library/libweb/Slusar/lta/index.htm ), beginning September, 2003. I'm beginning by teaching face to face, and am developing the distance learning and video modules as the term progresses. The course is being expanded to three classes, with a possibility of a certificate specialization in services to youth. The sequence will be called "Serving Youth in Libraries: 21st Century Skills I, II, III," and will be offered fall and spring quarters as LTA190. The class was developed in collaboration with practicing librarians and library directors who specifically requested that courses be offered for their youth services departments.
University of Chicago Center for School Improvement, Web Institute for Teachers, 2003. Collaborated to create a professional development class in the use of digital libraries for Chicago Public School teachers. This four-week, daily intensive incorporated the Inquiry Page. The new WIT class, "Resource-Full and Knowledge-Able: Using Digital Libraries in the Classroom" ( http://webinstituteforteachers.org/2003/about/dl-wit.php ) taught participants how to locate and use Web-based resources in the classroom, computer lab, and library media center with a focus on using digital libraries and taught them how to create their own digital libraries for use in their respective school media centers. My co-mentor (Christie Thomas, Asst. Director eCUIP at Regenstein Library U of C) and I are providing ongoing support and workshops for the 2003-2004 school year.

B.S. in Brain and Cognitive Science, MIT 2001
Research Interests
I am interested in developing methods for design of sociotechnical systems.
I prefer to understand this activity as guided evolution in sociotechnical
ecologies. In particular, I have three areas of
interest:
- Developing methods of structuring the rich detail present in many
ethnographic research studies so that it is useful for design
activities.
- Exploring how design techniques used in HCI and CSCW, such as
participatory design, patchwork prototyping, scenario-based design,
and various methods of rapid prototyping and evaluation can be used to
guide evolution in the broader context of sociotechnical ecologies.
- Exploring
how theoretical concepts developed in Social Informatics
and Social Studies of Technology can be used to inform and improve
designed interventions in sociotechnical ecologies.
